Sculptural Relief Project 2025

This sculptural relief was created directly on my bedroom wall using a combination of 90 Joint Compound, Foamular foam shaped with a hot wire foam cutter, Crayola air-dry clay, carving tools, spatulas, paint primer, paint, airbrush, and gold leaf. Each material was chosen for its versatility, allowing me to sculpt, refine, and embellish surfaces that carry depth, luminosity, and atmosphere.

I chose cherubs as the central motif because I’ve always seen myself as a kind of Cupid, someone who knew how to give love but rarely received it in return. The cherubs reflect that tension between offering affection and longing for it, embodying both tenderness and melancholy. They also serve as a personal tribute to the Baroque period, where ornament, drama, and radiance defined the visual language of art and architecture.

The addition of gold leaf highlights the sacred and timeless qualities of the figures, tying them to the opulence and spiritual symbolism of past eras while reimagining them in a contemporary, intimate setting.

This project marks the beginning of my sculptural journey, and I intend to expand further into works that channel the Romantic period, infusing my spaces and future projects with a sense of the mystical, whimsical, and otherworldly. For me, the cherubs are not just decorations but symbols of vulnerability, desire, and the beauty found in fleeting emotions.
